The Only Constant in Business is...


Charles Darwin is most noted for his findings on the evolution of different species, with his most recognized quote that describes the process of evolution being that it is all about“survival of the fittest”.


So, what does the survival of the fittest really mean? Is the fastest, smartest, biggest, strongest what?


I would suggest that it is not the fittest that survive, but the most adaptable.


The only constant in business is change, the only thing that doesn’t change is that pretty much everything changes, as we have dramatically witnessed in the last couple of years.


What do we need to do to become more adaptable in our businesses?


Firstly, we must be prepared to change. Most humans don’t like change, because it can sometimes mean a degree of discomfort, but it is in the discomfort that the change will occur.


If I was to put it bluntly, we need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Life is all about change if you haven’t noticed, either we choose where we want the change or life does and you may not like life’s choice for you.


Secondly, make change part of the culture in your business. Discuss it with your team regularly and begin to get them comfortable with it. Quite often they will see the changes we need to be making way before we do, so keep them engaged.


Finally, accept that change is inevitable in all areas of life, so no use complaining about it.


Now, change for the sake of change is not what this is about, so we need to think through any changes we make before we pull the trigger. But make no mistake, the business you have today will look very different to the business you have in 5 years, hopefully, you are still in business by then if that is what you want.
